The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI, has brought both exciting possibilities and complex challenges to PK-13 education. To address the need for responsible AI integration, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has developed comprehensive guidelines to help schools and districts navigate this new landscape.
This session will provide an overview of the process behind creating the "North Carolina Generative AI Implementation Recommendations and Considerations for PK-13 Public Schools." We will discuss the key problems and opportunities that motivated the development of these guidelines, such as preparing students for an AI-driven future, closing the digital divide, and mitigating risks associated with AI misuse.
The session will highlight essential components of the guidelines, including:
  • AI literacy recommendations by grade span
  • Strategies for effective and responsible use of AI tools
  • Guidance on rethinking plagiarism and academic integrity in the age of AI
  • Considerations for student data privacy and cybersecurity
  • Resources for staff development and student education on AI
  • Attendees will gain insights into how North Carolina is proactively addressing the challenges and embracing the opportunities presented by AI in PK-13 education. They will leave with a clearer understanding of the steps needed to responsibly integrate AI in their own schools and districts, empowering students and staff to become AI-literate citizens prepared for success in an AI-driven world.
